STAMFORD -- Standing in the synagogue where he performed the rites to enter into adulthood per the laws of Modern Orthodox Judaism, Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., spoke on behalf of his late mother and grandmother, namesakes of a new mikvah.
The congregation of Agudath Sholom held a ceremony Saturday to dedicate their new 2,000- square-foot mikvah -- a facility prized as much as a synagogue among Jewish communities, speakers at the ceremony said -- to Minnie Manger and Marcia Lieberman, who were active members of the congregation.
Mikvahs are ritual immersion pools used for purposes such as welcoming converts into the Jewish faith or purifying women after childbirth and each menstrual cycle.
